Business Opportunities In Punjab
Punjab
Often called the ‘Granary of India’, it is a well-developed state in terms of industrial outlook. Punjab has a rich industrial base of MSME units belonging to bicycle parts, auto components, hosiery, sports goods and agricultural implements. Not only is the state adorned with fertile land and a favourable climate to yield bountiful cereals, fruits, vegetables, oilseeds, pulses, and maize, but it also contributes 25% to India’s wheat production and 10% to rice production. Apart from this, Punjab is the second-largest manufacturer of bicycles and bicycle parts in the world. The state accounts for 92% of India’s production of bicycle parts and 75% of bicycle production of India. It is one of the major consumer markets of both northern and western India. Punjab Small Industries and Export Corporation (PSIEC) is accountable for the industrial and infrastructure developments in the state. According to the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT), cumulative FDI inflow in the state stood at US$ 741.23 million between October 2019 and March 2021. The Punjab Industrial Policy (2017) has identified eight core strategic pillars for the growth and promotion of industries in the state. In order to provide a holistic support for the growth of existing industries as well as attracting new manufacturing and service industries, the state would focus on the right set of drivers and enablers to create a business-friendly environment.
The success of the largest industrial towns of Ludhiana, Amritsar and Jalandhar has put Punjab on the industrial map of the country. Their strategic location on the National Highway 1 (NH-1) and the Amritsar-New Delhi railway link make the national capital and neighbouring regions easily accessible. Mohali, Patiala, Rajpura, Mandi Gobindgarh, Batala, Phagwara, and Malerkotla also have witnessed a fair amount of industrial growth in the last couple of years. Punjab is also developing a new Industrial Estate at Nabha for light engineering and a Light Engineering Park along the Eastern Dedicated Freight Corridor and the Amritsar Kolkata Industrial Corridor.
Punjab ranks second in logistics ease in the country. The state has one of the highest road densities amongst Indian states at 133 km per 100 sq. km. It is well connected to all major markets with 72,212 km of the total road network, 2,830 km of rail track network and 5 airports. It also offers a strong logistics backbone with five container freight stations (CFSs) and four inland container depots (ICDs). It has a total installed capacity of over 13,400 MW.
